Introducing the Saltwater Shoulder Bag! This bag features exterior kangaroo pockets on each side. They can have one or two openings to use for your phone, keys or other small items. The inside features a zippered pocket and a large divider pocket. The bag is generously sized without being too large and I’ve even provided detailed info for making it at 85%. It can be made from various fabric mediums such as more pliable faux leathers, vinyl, cork fabric or quilting cotton.

There will be several options for this bag, such as;

• one OR two shoulder straps

• magnetic snap closure OR recessed zipper closure

• 3 hardware options in the pattern but endless possibilities

This pattern has a facing technique that will be familiar to those that sew clothing and will be a very satisfying sew!

This PDF pattern includes:

• FULL Sized Pattern pieces

• a Cutting List (to use instead of the included rectangular pattern pieces - to save the trees!)

• colorful and clear diagrams for most steps

• an A0 copy-shop file

• Labels to keep track of your cut pieces

This pattern will be for the Ambitious Beginner / Intermediate Sewist. You'll need to know how to install zippers and be open to trying new techniques. You’ll need to choose your materials appropriately.

SALTWATER SHOULDER BAG FINISHED DIMENSIONS: 14 1/2"W x 12 1/2"H x 3 1/4"D

RECOMMENDED FABRICS:

• EXTERIOR: thin pliable vinyl/faux leather, cork, waxed canvas or waterproof canvas

• CONTRAST EXTERIOR: thin pliable vinyl, cork or quilting cotton

• LINING & CONTRAST LINING: quilting cotton, linen, or waterproof canvas

• FACING FABRIC (this will not be seen and some will be cut off): quilting cotton recommended

• WOVEN INTERFACING: Pellon SF101 or similar

• FIRM INTERFACING (for the gusset of the bag): Decovil Light, Pellon Thermolam Plus, foam or fusible fleece (something that will help the gusset maintain its shape)

FABRIC & WOVEN INTERFACING REQUIREMENTS: (measurements are approximate and don’t account for directional and/or fussy cutting)

*IMPORTANT* WOVEN INTERFACING REQUIREMENTS ARE OVER-ESTIMATED WITH INTERFACING ON EVERY PIECE - I USED APPROXIMATELY 1.5 YARDS OF 45" WIDE.

• EXTERIOR: 1 yard

• CONTRAST EXTERIOR: 1/3 yard

• LINING: 1 yard

• CONTRAST LINING: 1/4 yard

• FACING FABRIC: 3/4 yard

• WOVEN INTERFACING (20" wide / 45" wide): 5 yards / 2 1/3 yards

• FIRM INTERFACING: 1 yard

HARDWARE & SUPPLY REQUIREMENTS:

• 13" #5 continuous zipper tape and 1 zipper pull OR (1) - 14" #5 packaged zipper (divided zipper pocket)

• 11" #5 continuous zipper tape and 1 zipper pull OR (1) - 11" #5 packaged zipper (zipper pocket)

• (12-20) - rivets (post length determined by material thickness)

CHOOSE YOUR BAG CLOSURE

• MAGNETIC SNAP: (2) 18mm thin magnetic snaps

• RECESSED ZIPPER: 16" #5 continuous zipper tape and (1 or 2) zipper pulls OR (1) - 16" #5 packaged zipper AND (2) hardware zipper ends (optional)

CHOOSE YOUR SHOULDER STRAP HARDWARE

• OPTION 1 (one shoulder strap): (4) - 3/8" or 1/2" inside diameter grommets AND (2) - 1 1/4" or 1 1/2" spring-gate rings

• OPTION 2 (one shoulder strap): (4) - 1" D-rings AND (2) - 1 1/4" or 1 1/2" spring-gate rings

• OPTION 3 (two shoulder straps): (4) - 1" D-rings OR 1 1/4" spring-gate rings

RECOMMENDED HARDWARE & SUPPLIES:

• Double sided tape (DST) or Washaway Wonder Tape

• Pencil or fabric-safe marking utensil

• Wonder clips or similar

• Hole punch for rivets

• Rivet press or rivet hand setting tools
